Each Their Own Home

Each Their Own Home
All day, the quiet street,
the silent house, empty rooms
until twilight headlamps shine
against exterior garage doors.
Then, vacant chairs, dining tables,
yet rooms burst full with one
family member. Each lives
a life together yet alone.

What We Learn Together

My family taught silence,
not just for children.
Everyone conceals
quiet wrongs
only yells rights
until the words
hush to stillness
the throat raw
from all this silence.
