Trees Translated

dense fluent pipes
filtering messages
between extremes

eating earth
drinking air
shooting fingers

out to the world
their long medicine
from age to age

our alternate selves
as though they hold
us inside them

for this minute
of their lives when
we are alive

Birdseye

as from the firetower
standing in the sky above
Stillwater looking at
the Adirondacks in fall, lit
like a box of matches,
though today we won’t
burn from the bottom up.
In this steepness it is
as if you shake out like
a radiant rug with no
edges, dizzied with pines,
half-drowned in lakes, threaded
through & through with
heady air of a homeland.
