The Heavens Wake

The heavens wake
Slowly and quietly,
To the distant call of frogs across
the water.
A garbage truck rumbles
Past sleeping houses
And fades in the morning fog.

Even so the rumble of troubled thoughts
Fills my morning silence.
I stop to let it pass;
Cold air and clear bird song
Bring the rhythm back:
Here, Now, Breathe, Be.

The Pollywog Pond

The pollywog pond was dry today;
I wonder if they had fair warning,
so each in his own way might
draw the energy he needed
to seek the life-giving flow
of water, sweet water,
that surrounds us
but sometimes seems so distant.
