1. Hayden Carruth

It’s hard to write in isolation,
though, of course, everyone
who writes, writes alone.

My fellow Syracusan,
you derived both spark and comfort
from your communion with Tu Fu.

Three would be a crowd,
I fear. Still,
wish you both were here.

2. Louise Glück

Pared, precise,
you parse the view
from your vantage:

the world,
evenly quartered
by the crosshairs
in the scope
of your unerring
sniper’s pen.

Early Morning

The day slips in—
a girl with her
party shoes

dangling by their sling
from her fingertip,
on her toes,
in her frock,

stealing through
the east-facing
kitchen door.

It’s too early to wake
the sleepers
under white covers.

The Garden in Winter

At the edge of the bed,
by the path you must clear,
brittle bones of lavender
bristle through the snow.

Scrape them with the shovel’s edge.
That will raise the pleasant dead:

A gust from last summer,
a promise ahead—
today’s withering cold
haunted with scent.
