Emergence

watersoaked feathers
wake in alabaster wombs—
a beak breaks the shell
and defiant daffodils
push through crusted sleet and snow

~Apex, North Carolina

Opening Notes

drowsy morning mist
rises with the lilt of loons
when a fern uncurls
slender fingers pearled with dew
stroke the strings of hidden harps

~Damariscotta, Maine

Rainbow Trout

a silent osprey
rows through air on feathered oars—
unrippled waters
hold a rainbow in their hands
and brace for untucked talons

~Deep Creek Lake, McHenry, Maryland

Empty Nest

a soft-spoken breeze
rocks an empty eagle nest—
leaves feathered with frost
cradle downy ghosts of young
content within walled edges

~Caledon State Park, King George, Virginia

Pallor

bold winterberries
blaze amid the seas of snow
where fields lie fallow
a trio of cardinals
kindles color from the cold

~Fredericksburg, Virginia

Metamorphosis

the faded goldfinch
sings an ember into fire—
a December sun
cradles notes of mourning doves
and melts their melancholy

~Shepherdstown, West Virginia
