I.

August 6th
we fold paper cranes
fifty each
for all the years passed
and kindle fire
add the cranes
one by one
messengers
pointing
in a thin gray column
a misshapen finger
taking what we knew
in our hands
when we folded

II.

Along the river
migrating swans
settle into the nacreous water
ahead I see great white wings
fluttering, trying to rise
or so it appears
as nearsighted
I make paper
caught on driftwood
into the flight of birds

-stanza break-
