Sheila Parenteau writes, "I journal and had always admired the poetry of songs but had never written poetry (just a little in high school in the 70's) until October 2011, when I attended my first poetry workshop. It is facilitated by Ocean State Poets Margie Flanders and Larry Krips. They opened up the world of poetry and inspired me to find my "voice." (It meets bi-monthly at the Warwick Public Library and is the highlight of my and my family's life.)
After attending Vesper George School of Art in Boston, I went on to work for Hasbro Toys designing Lite Brite and other packaging. Left there to freelance. I painted murals, such as for Cornerstone School in Cranston, designed and illustrated posters - 'Rhode Island: A View of the World' thru a publishing company then illustrated and self-published 'City Portraits Publishing' - commemorative posters of Cranston and Warwick.
I made a career change by attending New England Tech and became an Occupational Therapy Assistant, where I still use my art/creativity skills but find it more rewarding to work with people and help them feel better thru "doing" and creating. I currently work as a COTA at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in the Psych department and try to use Art, Music, and Writing in as many groups as I can. I am blessed with a wonderful husband and two daughters who also write poetry and are artistic.
